गोवा लगभग 450 साल तक पुर्तगाली शासन के आधीन रहा इसलिए यहां पर यूरोपीय संस्कृति का प्रभाव अधिक महसूस होता है। दिसंबर 1961 में गोवा को भारतीय प्रशासन को सौंपा गया था। संस्कृति की दृष्टि से गोवा की संस्कृति काफी प्राचीन है। मान्यता है कि 1000 साल पहले गोवा ष्कोंकण काशीष् के नाम से जाना जाता था। क्षेत्रफल के हिसाब से देखा जाये तो गोवा भारत का सबसे छोटा और जनसंख्या के हिसाब से चौथा सबसे छोटा राज्य है। पूरी दुनिया में गोवा अपने खूबसूरत समुंदर के किनारों और मशहूर स्थापत्य कला के लिये जाना जाता है।
बहुत कम ही लोग जानते होंगे कि गोवा के बारे में एक मान्यता यह भी है कि इसकी रचना स्वयं भगवान परशुराम ने की थी। भगवान परशुराम ने एक यज्ञ के दौरान अपने बाणों की वर्षा से समुद्र को कई स्थानों पर पीछे धकेल दिया था। इसी वजह से आज भी गोवा में बहुत से स्थानों का नाम वाणावली, वाणस्थली इत्यादि हैं। उत्तरी गोवा में हरमल के पास भूरे रंग के एक पर्वत को परशुराम के यज्ञ करने का स्थान माना जाता है।
गोवा के मनभावन समुद्री किनारों की बात करें तो इनमें पणजी से 16 किलोमीटर दूर कलंगुट बीच, उसके पास बागा बीच, पणजी बीच के निकट मीरामार बीच, जुआरी नदी के मुहाने पर दोनापाउला बीच प्रमुख हैं। इसके अलावा दूसरी दिशा की ओर देखेंगे तो कोलवा बीच पर मानसून के समय पर्यटक बड़ी तादाद में जुटते हैं। बागाटोर बीच, अंजुना बीच, सिंकेरियन बीच, पालोलेम बीच जैसे अन्य सुंदर सागर तट भी मन को बड़े लुभावने लगते हैं। गोवा में कई ऐतिहासिक और प्राचीन मंदिर भी हैं जिनमें श्री कामाक्षी, सप्तकेटेश्वर, श्री शांतादुर्ग, महालसा नारायणी, परनेम का भगवती मंदिर और महालक्ष्मी मंदिर आदि दर्शनीय हैं।
पर्यटन के अलावा गोवा में लौह खनिज भी बड़ी मात्रा में पाया जाता है। इसके अलावा गोवा का मछली पालन उद्योग भी काफी प्रमुख है। यहाँ के काजू की गुणवत्ता सउदी अरब, ब्रिटेन तथा अन्य यूरोपीय राष्ट्रों में भी काफी प्रसिद्ध है। फुटबाल गोवा का सबसे लोकप्रिय खेल है। यहाँ कई लोकप्रिय फुटबाल क्लब भी हैं।
गोवा के हवाई मानचित्र की बात करें तो राजधानी पणजी देश के सभी प्रमुख शहरों से जुड़ी हुई है। इसके अलावा सड़क मार्ग से गोवा आना चाहें तो मुम्बई, बंगलोर से काफी अच्छी कनेक्टिविटी है। कोंकण रेलवे के माध्यम से गोवा रेल नेटवर्क से भी जुड़ा हुआ है।
