हिमालय की गोद में बसे सिक्किम राज्य को प्रकृति के रहस्यमय सौंदर्य की भूमि या फूलों का प्रदेश कहना गलत नहीं होगा। वास्तव में यहां के नैसर्गिक सौंदर्य में जो आकर्षण है, वह अन्यत्र दुर्लभ है। नदियां, झीलें, बौद्ध मठ और स्तूप तथा हिमालय के बेहद लुभावने दृश्यों को देखने के अनेक स्थान, ये सभी हर प्रकृतिप्रेमी को बाहें फैलाए आमंत्रित करते हैं। विश्व की तीसरी सबसे ऊंची पर्वतचोटी कंचनजंगा (28156 फुट) यहां की सुंदरता में चार चांद लगाती है। सूर्य की सुनहली किरणों की आभा में नई-नवेली दुलहन की तरह दिखने वाली इस चोटी के हर क्षण बदलते मोहक दृश्य सुंदरता की नई-नई परिभाषाएं गढ़ते हुए से लगते हैं। मनुष्य की कल्पनाओं का सागर यहां हिलोरें मारने लगता है।
जीवंत वातावरण
भारत के उत्तर-पूर्व और पूर्व में फैले इस राज्य का क्षेत्रफल 7096 वर्ग किलोमीटर है और जनसंख्या लगभग पांच लाख। चीन के अधीनस्थ तिब्बत से व्यापारिक संबंधों के समय व्यावसायिक महत्व का स्थान रहा गंगटोक आज के सिक्किम की राजधानी है। इस शहर की स्थापना 19वीं शताब्दी के मध्य में हुई थी। इससे पहले राज्य के पश्चिमी भाग में युकसम और इसके बाद राबडेंसे नामक स्थानों को सिक्किम की राजधानी होने का गौरव प्राप्त था। देश-विदेश से आने वाले पर्यटकों, हनीमून मनाने वाले जोड़ों तथा राज्य के सुदूर क्षेत्रों में ट्रेकिंग और साहसिक पर्यटन के शौकीन लोगों की आवाजाही गंगटोक के वातावरण को हमेशा जीवंत बनाए रखती है।
पर्यटन की दृष्टि से सुविधापूर्वक सिक्किम दर्शन के लिए राज्य को चार भागों में बांटा जा सकता है। सबसे पहले पूर्व में गंगटोक तथा इसके आसपास कई दर्शनीय स्थल हैं। समुद्रतल से 5800 फुट की ऊंचाई पर स्थित गंगटोक का प्रारंभ से ही समुचित विकास होता आया है। यहां अच्छे से अच्छे रहने के स्थान, यातायात के साधन तथा संचार माध्यम उपलब्ध हैं। राज्य की पारंपरिक हस्तशिल्प और हथकरघा की वस्तुओं का केंद्र भी पर्यटकों के लिए विशेष आकर्षण का स्थान है।
यहां से केवल तीन किलोमीटर की दूरी पर 200 वर्ष पुराना महत्वपूर्ण बौद्ध मठ इंचे मॉनेस्ट्री है। ऐसा माना जाता है कि यहां आने वाले श्रद्धालुओं को लामा द्रुप्तोब कार्पो का आशीर्वाद मिलता है। लामा द्रुप्तोब यहां के लोकजीवन में आस्था के एक गहरे प्रतीक के रूप में रचे-बसे हैं। हर साल जनवरी के आसपास यहां छाम नृत्य का उत्सव आयोजित किया जाता है। यह उत्सव दो दिन तक धूमधाम से मनाया जाता है। व्हाइट हॉल के पास पूरे वर्ष फूलों की प्रदर्शनी भी लगाई जाती है। फूलों वाली विभिन्न जड़ी-बूटियों की एक प्रदर्शनी यहां वसंत ऋतु में भी आयोजित की जाती है, जो बेहद लोकप्रिय हो चुकी है।
बौद्ध अध्ययन का केंद्र
गंगटोक में ही स्थित नामग्याल इंस्टीट्यूट ऑफ टिबेटोलॉजी (एनआईटी) नाम का बौद्ध संस्थान दुर्लभ लेपचा, तिब्बती व संस्कृत पांडुलिपियों, मूर्तियों, थंका, कर्मकांड और पूजन विधि में प्रयोग आने वाले कपड़ों (टेपेस्ट्रीज) आदि दो सौ से अधिक बहुमूल्य वस्तुओं तथा कलाकृतियों का खजाना है। धार्मिक और ऐतिहासिक दोनों ही दृष्टियों से महत्वपूर्ण यह संस्थान आज पूरे विश्व के लिए बौद्ध दर्शन तथा धर्म का अध्ययन केंद्र बना हुआ है।
छोग्याल पाल्डेन थोंडुप नामग्याल की स्मृति में यहां एक पार्क बना हुआ है। छोग्याल अर्थात राजा। नामग्याल वंश के 17वें तथा धार्मिक कार्यो के लिए पवित्रीकरण संस्कार प्राप्त 12वें राजा पाल्डेन थोंडुप की आर्थिक और सामाजिक सुधारों में शुरू से गहरी आस्था थी। राजा पाल्डेन आधुनिक शासन प्रणाली के समर्थक थे। इनके शासनकाल में ही सिक्किम में आधारभूत सुविधाओं की नींव रखी गई। सीमित संसाधनों के बावजूद उन्होंने स्कूल, सड़कें, चिकित्सालय आदि बनाने, पेयजल उपलब्ध कराने, यातायात हेतु सिक्किम राष्ट्रीयकृत ट्रांसपोर्ट, हाइड्रो-इलेक्ट्रिक पॉवर स्कीम तथा ग्रामीण क्षेत्रों के विकास के लिए अन्य योजनाएं चलाने के लिए भी लगातार सहायता दी। 1982 में इनका देहांत हुआ। अंत तक वह बौद्धिक सोसाइटी ऑफ इंडिया के अध्यक्ष रहे।
पवित्र छांगू झील
छांगू लेक, जिसे स्थानीय लोग छो गो लेक कहते हैं, गंगटोक से 40 किलोमीटर दूर है। समुद्रतल से 3780 मीटर की ऊंचाई पर स्थित यह अंडाकार झील एक किलोमीटर लंबी और 15 मीटर गहरी है। स्थानीय लोगों की मान्यताओं के अनुसार यह एक पवित्र स्थान है। शीतकाल में यह जमी रहती है। मई से अगस्त के बीच इसके चारों ओर फैली पर्वतश्रृंखला व घाटियों में विभिन्न प्रकार के फूल खिले होते हैं। यहां खिलने वाले फूलों में रोडोडेंड्रोन, कई प्रकार के प्रिमुला, नीले और पीले पॉपीज, आइरिस आदि प्रमुख हैं। लाल पांडा तथा कई प्रजातियों के पक्षियों का यह पसंदीदा स्थान है।
इसी दिशा में गंगटोक से 56 किलोमीटर दूर समुद्रतल से 14200 फुट की ऊंचाई पर स्थित नाथू ला है। ला अर्था पास या एक पहाड़ को लांघकर दूसरी ओर जाने का रास्ता। नाथू ला भारत-चीन (तिब्बत का पठार) सीमा पर स्थित है। यहां जाने के लिए पंजीकृत ट्रेवल एजेंसी के माध्यम से सिक्किम पर्यटन विभाग से परमिट लेनी पड़ती है। नाथू ला की ओर जाने की परमिट केवल भारतीय नागरिक ही पा सकते हैं। पहाड़ी क्षेत्रों में पाई जाने वाली जड़ी-बूटियां और पेड़-पौधे देखने के शौकीन लोगों के लिए इसी क्षेत्र में स्थित सरमसा गार्डन और जवाहरलाल नेहरू बोटेनिकल गार्डन दर्शनीय हैं। जबकि वन्य जीवन में रुचि लेने वालों के लिए हिमालयन जूलोजिकल पार्क तथा फेम्बोंग लो वाइल्ड लाइफ सैंक्चुअरी दिलचस्प जगहें हो सकती हैं। इनके अलावा दो द्रुल छोरटेन, रुमटेक धर्म चक्र केंद्र, पाल जुरमांग कागयुद मॉनेस्ट्री, वाटर गार्डन, बाबा हरभजन सिंह मेमोरियल, ताशी व्यू प्वाइंट, गोन्जांग मॉनेस्ट्री, गणेश टोंक, हनुमान टोंक, नोर छो सुक तथा अरितार यहां के अन्य दर्शनीय स्थल हैं।
जहां मिट जाते हैं पाप
पश्चिमी सिक्किम में पेमायांगसे मॉनेस्ट्री सबसे प्राचीन बौद्ध मठों में से एक है। राज्य की पहली राजधानी युकसम यहीं है। तीन विद्वान लामाओं द्वारा सन् 1641 में सिक्किम राज्य के प्रथम छोग्याल (राजा) का पवित्रीकरण संस्कार यहीं किया गया था। इसका प्रमाण नोरबूगांग छोरटेन में आज भी मौजूद है, जहां पत्थरों के सिंहासन और एक पत्थर पर मुख्य लामा के पैर की छाप देखी जा सकती है। वस्तुतः इस राज्य का इतिहास यहीं से शुरू होता है। स्थानीय लोग इस क्षेत्र को अत्यंत पवित्र मानते हैं। जोंगरी-जेमाथांग तथा कंचनजंगा बेस कैंप के लिए ट्रेकिंग कार्यक्रम भी युकसम से ही शुरू होते हैं। युकसम के बाद कुछ ही दूरी पर स्थित राबडेंसे राज्य की दूसरी राजधानी बनी थी। यहां अब केवल खंडहर शेष हैं। सन् 1814 तक यहीं से राजा ने राज्य का संचालन किया।
ताशीडिंग मॉनेस्ट्री हृदय के आकार की पहाड़ी पर बनाई गई है, जिसके पीछे पवित्र कंचनजंगा पर्वत है। बौद्ध धर्मग्रंथों के अनुसार 8वीं शताब्दी में गुरु पद्मसंभाव, जिन्हें गुरु रिम्पूछे भी कहा जाता है, ने इस स्थान से ही सिक्किम की पवित्र भूमि को आशीर्वाद दिया था। ऐसा माना जाता है कि आज भी यहां आने वालों को गुरु रिम्पूछे का आशीर्वाद प्राप्त होता है। लेपचा समुदाय की बहुलता वाली इस घाटी में स्थित पवित्र गुरु इहेदू में गुरु रिम्पूछे के पैरों और हाथों के चिन्ह अभी भी सुरक्षित हैं। ताशीडिंग पवित्र छोरटेन (स्तूप) थोंग वा रांग डोल के लिए भी प्रसिद्ध है। इसका अर्थ है देखने भर से जीवनरक्षा करने वाला। ऐसा विश्वास है कि इस स्तूप को देखने मात्र से श्रद्धालु के सभी पाप मिट जाते हैं। प्रतिवर्ष पवित्र जल उत्सव भी केवल यहीं होता है, जब यहां का जल दूर और पास से आए श्रद्धालुओं को दिया जाता है। यहां पेलिंग, सांगा-छोलिंग मोनास्ट्री, सिंगशोर ब्रिज उट्टारे, कंचनजंगा वाटर फॉल, खेद्दोपालरी लेक, दुबकी मोनास्ट्री, रंगित वाटर वर्ल्ड, कोगरी लाबडांग, बारसे, सोरेंग, रिनछेंगपोंग कालुक, ही बुरीमयोक तथा डेंटाम आदि भी दर्शनीय हैं।
संधि भाईचारे की
उत्तरी सिक्किम में जेमू ग्लेशियर से निकलने वाली तीस्ता नदी राज्य का गौरव बढ़ाती है। व्हाइट वाटर राफ्टिंग और कयाकिंग आदि वाटर स्पोर्ट्स के शौकीन लोगों के लिए सिक्किम में यही आकर्षण का मुख्य केंद्र है। मई-जून में यहां साहसिक पर्यटन के शौकीन लोगों की खासी भीड़ जुटी होती है। भारत ही नहीं, दुनिया के अन्य देशों से भी लोग यहां रोमांचक खेलों का मजा लेने तथा प्रकृति की सुंदरता को निहारने के लिए आते हैं।
अगर आप वन्य प्राणियों के जीवन में रुचि लेते हैं तो उत्तरी सिक्किम में ही स्थित कंचनजंगा नेशनल पार्क बहुत मुफीद जगह है। 850 वर्ग किलोमीटर में फैले इस वन्य जीव अभ्यारण्य को बायोस्फीयर रिजर्व के नाम से भी जानते हैं। यहां तमाम दुर्लभ प्रजातियों के कई जीव स्वच्छंद विचरण करते हैं। इसके क्षेत्र में कई ग्लेशियर भी हैं, जिनमें जेमू ग्लेशियर सबसे लंबा और नयनाभिराम है। चिड़ियों की यहां कुल 550 प्रजातियां पाई जाती हैं। इनमें ब्लड फेजेंट, सेटायर ट्रैगोपन, ऑस्प्रे, हिमालयन ग्रिफॉन, लैमर्जियर, बर्फीला कबूतर, इंपेयन फेजेंट, सन बर्ड्स और गरुड़ शामिल हैं। जंगली पशुओं में यहां क्लाउडेड लेपर्ड, हिमालय क्षेत्र में पाया जाने वाला काला भालू, लाल पांडा, ब्लू शीप, कस्तूरी हिरन, हिमालयन थार, लेसर बिल्लियां, तिब्बती भेड़िये और भेड़ आदि भारी मात्रा में देखे जा सकते हैं। कंचनजंगा का शाब्दिक अर्थ है देवताओं का ऐसा आवास जिसमें पांच घर हों। कंचनजंगा के पांच घरों के रूप में नरशिंग, पंदिम, सिम्वो, कब्रू और सिनिओल्चू नामक पर्वतशिखरों की गिनती की जाती है। इनमें पंदिम, नरशिंग और सिनिओल्चू इसी पार्क के क्षेत्र में ही हैं। दुनिया भर से तमाम प्रकृतिप्रेमी पर्यटक तो इन पर्वतशिखरों को ही देखने के लिए इस अभ्यारण्य में आते हैं।
उत्तरी सिक्किम में ही एक ऐतिहासिक स्थान है काबीलंगचोक। सिक्किम के इतिहास में यह जगह अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण है, क्योंकि यहां लेपचा जाति के मुखिया ते कुंग तेक तथा भुटिया जाति के मुखिया खे बुम सा के बीच आपसी भाईचारे की संधि हुई थी। घने जंगल के बीच जिस स्थान पर यह संधि हुई थी वहां पत्थर के स्तंभ के रूप में एक स्मारक भी बनाया गया है। इसके अतिरिक्त यहां फेनसांग मॉनेस्ट्री, फोडोंग मॉनेस्ट्री, सिंघिक, छुंगथांग, लाछुंग, युमथांग, लाछेन मॉनेस्ट्री, थांगु एवं गुरु डोंगमार लेक भी दर्शनीय स्थल हैं।
आकाश जितना ऊंचा
पर्यटन की दृष्टि से इन तीन क्षेत्रों के बाद बारी आती है दक्षिणी सिक्किम की। गंगटोक से 78 किलोमीटर दूर है नामची। इसका अर्थ है आकाश जितना ऊंचा। यहां से बर्फ से ढके पहाड़ तथा दूर तक फैली घाटी के दृश्य देखे जा सकते हैं। नामची दक्षिण सिक्किम का जिला मुख्यालय भी है। पर्यटन सुविधाओं के मामले में अब इसका तेजी से विकास हो रहा है। हर साल फरवरी में यहां फूलों का त्योहार मनाया जाता है। नामची से साढ़े तीन किलोमीटर की दूरी पर हाल ही में राज्य सरकार ने गुरु पद्मसंभाव की 135 फुट ऊंची मूर्ति स्थापित की है। यह मूर्ति मिश्रित धातु से बनाई गई है, जिसमें कीमती पत्थर जड़े गए हैं।
टेंडोंग हिल 8530 फुट की ऊंचाई पर स्थित एक छोटा सा स्थान है, जहां घना हरा प्राचीन जंगल है। यह स्थल बौद्ध लामाओं की तपोभूमि रही है जहां वे वर्षो तक शांत वातावरण में रहकर ध्यान लगाते आए हैं। कहा जाता है कि किसी युग में हुई प्रलयंकारी वर्षा के दौरान इसी स्थान पर लेपचा जाति के लोगों को संरक्षण मिला था। आज भी लेपचा लोग इस स्थान को पूजते हैं।
साहसिक पर्यटन का गढ़
समुद्रतट से 10300 फुट की ऊंचाई पर स्थित मीनम हिल से कंचनजंगा और अन्य पर्वत श्रृंखलाओं, दक्षिण बंगाल के कलिम्पोंग और दार्जिलिंग तथा उत्तर में भारत-चीन सीमा को देखा जा सकता है। नरसिंह तथा पाकिलु पर्वतों के आधार से आने वाली रंगित नदी दक्षिण सिक्किम से बहती हुई तीस्ता नदी में मिलती है। इन दोनों ही नदियों के तटों पर मौजूद मनोरम दृश्य बरबस ही सबका मन मोह लेते हैं। टेमी टी गार्डन, रावांगला, बोरोंग, सिंगछुथांग सिक्किम तथा फुर सा छू अन्य देखने योग्य स्थान हैं।
साहसिक पर्यटन के शौकीन लोगों के बीच सिक्किम बेहद लोकप्रिय है। यहां ट्रेकिंग और राफ्टिंग के कई अड्डे हैं। कई पर्यटक स्थलों से एक-दो दिन के लिए ट्रेकिंग पर जाना आम बात है। इसके अलावा यहां सुनियोजित ढंग से लंबे ट्रेकिंग प्रोग्राम भी आयोजित किए जाते हैं। ट्रेकिंग रूटों में मोनास्टिक ट्रेक, रोडोडेंड्रन ट्रेक, कंचनजंगा ट्रेक, कोरोनेशन ट्रेक, खेडी ट्रेक, सिंगालीला ट्रेक, कस्तूरी ओरार ट्रेक, सामरट्रेक, रिनछेनपोंग या सोरेंग ट्रेक और हिमालय ट्रेक प्रमुख हैं। अधिकतर ट्रेकिंग कार्यक्रम अप्रैल से जून तथा अक्टूबर से दिसंबर के बीच किए जाते हैं। रिवर राफ्टिंग के लिए अक्टूबर से दिसंबर का समय सबसे उपयुक्त है। तीस्ता तथा रंगित दोनों नदियों में रिवर राफ्टिंग होती है। कयाकिंग केवल तीस्ता में ही होती है। सिक्किम में याक सफारी का भी आनंद लिया जा सकता है।
खानपान तिब्बत जैसा
सिक्किम और तिब्बत के खान-पान में बड़ी समानता है। चिकन मोमो, पोर्क मोमो, शाकाहारी और पनीर मोमो, थुकपा (सूप या तरीदार सब्जी की तरह खाया जाने वाला), टी मोमो व शाभाले यहां के प्रमुख एवं विशेष व्यंजन हैं। वैसे तो गंगटोक के रेस्टोरेंट्स में तो भारत के हर प्रांत का भोजन मिल जाता है, लेकिन यहां आने के बाद स्थानीय व्यंजनों का स्वाद लेने का भी अपना अलग आनंद है। इनमें थुकपा वेज और नॉन वेज दोनों प्रकार का बनता है। टी मोमो स्टीम ब्रेड की तरह बनाई जाती है। मैदे में खमीर मिलाकर और गर्म पानी से गूंदकर इसे तैयार किया जाता है। शाभाले नामक रोटी में मीट भरा जाता है और पूरी की तरह तलकर इसे तैयार किया जाता है।
कैसे पहुंचें
पृथ्वी की भौगोलिक असमानताओं में बिखरे प्राकृतिक सौंदर्य का अद्वितीय पक्ष सिक्किम राज्य सड़क, रेल तथा हवाई मार्गो के जरिये देश के विभिन्न महानगरों से अच्छी तरह जुड़ा हुआ है। उत्तरी बंगाल में बागडोगरा हवाई अड्डा राजधानी गंगटोक के सबसे समीप है। हवाई अड्डे से 124 किलोमीटर की दूरी सड़क मार्ग से लगभग चार घंटों में तय हो जाती है। बागडोगरा विमान पत्तन कोलकाता, गुवाहाटी और नई दिल्ली से इंडियन एयरलाइंस और दूसरी एयरलाइनों की उड़ानों से जुड़ा हुआ है। सिक्किम पर्यटन विभाग का पांच सीटों वाला हेलीकॉप्टर बागडोगरा और गंगटोक के बीच प्रतिदिन हवाई सेवा प्रदान करता है। रेलमार्ग पर सबसे समीप दो स्टेशन सिलीगुड़ी तथा न्यू जलपाईगुड़ी हैं। गंगटोक से इनकी दूरी क्रमशः 114 व 125 किलोमीटर है।
परमिट की जरूरत
सीमांत प्रदेश होने के कारण विदेशी नागरिकों को यहां आने के लिए इनर लाइन परमिट (आईएलपी) लेना होता है। यह परमिट उन्हें भारत में प्रवेश हेतु मिले वीजा के आधार पर मिल जाता है। भारतीय दूतावासों तथा देश में पर्यटन कार्यालयों से या सिक्किम पहुंच कर भी यह परमिट प्राप्त किया जा सकता है, जिसकी अवधि 15 दिन होती है। यह अवधि बढ़वाई भी जा सकती है।
होटल एवं लॉज
पूर्वी सिक्किम में अकेले गंगटोक और उसके आसपास ही सौ से अधिक होटल, चालीस से अधिक लॉज तथा पांच सरकारी होटल एवं लॉज हैं। निजी क्षेत्र में अनोला, ब्लू स्काई, सेंट्रल होटल, डोमा, ग्रीन, हिल व्यू, काबुर, ल्हाकपा, मेलोंग, नोरबू घांग, ओबेरॉय, रेड रूबी, पालीखल, सैंफेल, सोनम, त्रिशूल, वीनस बुडलैंड, युमथांग आदि अच्छे होटल तथा मानसारी, कामेलिया, सनशाइन, नाहन आदि सुंदर लॉज है। सरकारी क्षेत्र में ब्लू शीप रेस्टोरेंट, माउंट जोपुनो, माउंट पंडिम, सिनियोल्छु तथा टूरिस्ट सेंटर आदि प्रमुख होटल एवं लॉज हैं। इसी तरह पश्चिमी सिक्किम में आंचल, बिनटाम, डेमाजोंग, ग्रीन वैली, सोरेंग, कंचनजंगा, नोरबूगांग रिजॉर्ट, ताशी गांग अच्छे होटल हैं। उत्तर में डाबला इन, कान्डेन, न्यू नॉथ वे, प्रिमुला लॉज, सोनम, टोगा व याक एंड यति तथा दक्षिण में बेबिला फ्लोरोडा, हॉली डे, माउंट नरसिंह, संजीवनी, जोंगरी आदि दक्षिण में अच्छे होटल एवं लॉज हैं।
मौसम एवं तापमान
ग्रीष्म ऋतु में गंगटोक का तापमान अधिकतम 21 डिग्री तथा न्यूनतम 13 डिग्री सेंटीग्रेड होता है तथा शरद ऋतु में अधिकतम 13 डिग्री तथा न्यूनतम 05.3 डिग्री सेंटीग्रेड। विश्व में सबसे अधिक वर्षा चेरापूंजी में होती है। यह स्थान सिक्किम से अधिक दूर नहीं है। अतः राज्य में भ्रमण के लिए सबसे उत्तम समय मार्च से जून तक तथा अक्टूबर से दिसंबर तक है। गंगटोक में प्रतिवर्ष औसतन वर्षा 3894 मिलीमीटर होती है। 15 साल के अंतराल के बाद गत फरवरी मास में यहां बर्फबारी हुई है।
